About 30 educators from around the country visited Harwood Union High School Wednesday to see programs that help students learn how to participate in a democracy.
The Institute for Democratic Education in America, a national education reform group, organizes tours in various parts of the country to highlight innovative and successful practices.
SLAM is a peer mentoring program initiated in response to the results of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey. In an effort to create more opportunities for risk behavior prevention in younger students, junior and senior students in the SLAM program will facilitate discussions and provide support for middle school students within their health and guidance classes.
